Newsletter Content Ideas

Do you send a regular newsletter? If you don't, you might want to consider it as email marketing is one of the best forms of marketing for CTRs (Click Through Rate) and a regular newsletter helps keep you relevant in the eyes of your subscribers. If you're doing a regular newsletter, you might be stuck for content ideas as you won't want to do the same content every single week/month/quarter otherwise your newsletter will become boring.

How to grow my email list as an unpublished author

Share your blog posts

A lot of your marketing efforts should be focused on bringing traffic to your website as that could mean more sales, brand awareness, building a fan base and so on. One way of bringing traffic to your website is by utilising a blog, this is helpful for a number of reasons such as building a fan base, becoming an industry leader, etc, etc.


Choose a subscriber of the month/quarter/etc

This is a great way to reward your subscribers and keep them subscribed to your emails. Whether you just shout them on your website, social media and newsletter or provide them with a gift of sorts, whether that's a digital gift or physical.


Share how your writing has been going

This will be something that those who enjoy your books will find interesting as they'll want to know where you're at in your writing journey. My advice is to be honest and relatable. If you've had a tough writing week, share that, don't feel the need to pretend like you don't have struggles as your email subscribers won't find that interesting or real.


Share latest book news

If you're building a fan base, which I suggest you work on, sharing your latest book news will provide something exciting for your subscribers. As an author, your subscribers will want and expect to hear if you've come out with a new book, or are accepting beta readers, or have come out with book-themed merchandise.


Share what you're reading

Chances are that your email subscribers are fans of your books, and so they're most likely fans of reading. A great way to connect with your readers is to share what you're reading. You could even ask others to reply to your email and share what they're reading - get a conversation going.


Share latest reviews

Sharing reviews is a great way to entice others who may not have bought your book yet to go ahead and buy it. Similarly, if they've already bought it, raving reviews can also encourage them to push your book to the top of their TBR pile, or encourage them to leave their own review.


Share your latest social media posts

Don't assume that all of your email subscribers follow you on social media, or at least not on every platform of social media you have an account with. Share your latest social media posts to encourage them to follow you. A tip would be to share a social post that has a great exclusive caption, for example, a snippet from the next book in your series, exciting news, etc.


Share user-generated content about your books

This is a great content piece that I would highly encourage everyone to use. People see others doing something and they want to be involved and do it also so by sharing user-generated content that others have taken and posted, you can encourage others to do the same. User-generated content could be anything from social media photos, to reviews, to online blogs about your book or even fan-base groups and websites.


Ask for reviews

Reviews are so important for your book as they help encourage others to buy so you should be trying to gather as many reviews as possible. I would suggest prioritising reviews on shops where your book is to be bought, such as Amazon, Waterstones, Barnes & Noble, etc, over sites like Goodreads as most likely people will have your book recommended to them, or come across your book, on these online shop sites.


Host a Q&A or ask for questions

You want your newsletter to be engaging and fun so that subscribers will read all the way to the bottom of the newsletter and a great way to do this, and also ensure you're interacting with your audience, is by hosting a Q&A. In one newsletter, you could create a Google Form or ask them to reply to your email with a question for the Q&A. In the next newsletter, you could then answer those questions. Popular Fantasy author, Leigh Bardugo, does this really well so subscribe to her email list if you haven't already for great inspiration.


Run competitions and giveaways

You want to give people a reason to sign up for your newsletter but also keep your subscribers subscribed. A great way to achieve both of these goals is by running competitions and giveaways. For example, you could put it out on social media that the next newsletter you send will award one subscriber a signed copy of your book. People who want a signed copy of your book are then more likely to sign up.


Share exclusive chapters, short stories or anything else

Give the people what they want! Chances are that if someone subscribes to your email list, they know that you're an author and they want to get exclusive content before anyone else. Your newsletter can provide them with this.
